I was half of the the visual design team for 3 FLOWERS club nights. We collaborated to make projections & decorations to fill the space.

FLOWERS 3

FLOWERS 3 was at Woolwich Set Social- a much bigger space to fill than VFD. For the main dance space I sewed a vine/tentacle structure out of a second-hand faux satin bedsheet. I hung these around the DJ booth to make a tenacle cave. And we hung the netted tentacles from FLOWERS 2 from the ceiling to creature more of an entranceway down the ramp. I also liked the idea of it slightly separating people standing there from the main space and them being able to look through the vines at the performers & rest of the space.

We hung a large white translucent sheet from a lighting rig on the ground floor and projected our films from FLOWERS 2 to fill this space.

FLOWERS 2

For the 2nd FLOWERS event I sewed tentacle/vine-like structures with neon netting and filmed them swirling around in a bathtub. I then played around layering visual effects in DaVinci Resolve, and stacked these on top of glitchy 3D visual scans a my co-designer has been collecting. I really enjoyed discovering that I get the shape of the architectural scans filled with the texture of the moving netting. I enjoyed pairing the fluid movement with digital malfunctions, as well as the happy accidents I stumbled across as I continued to layer and play with colour combinations and effects. I ended up with 4 30min films that we paired with each DJ playing: Colourful, Darker, Darkest & Glitchy. I then decorated the space with the netted tentacles I used for filming & some recycled foil curtain scraps. The final space had the energy of the end of a kids birthday party, which played with the abstract visuals, and dancing bodies in the space.

For the First FLOWERS club night we made projections by filming the process of marbling paper in a white bucket. I played around with the footage of the inky swirls and layered the altered images to create different effects. This footage was projected in the space, as collages made of the marbled paper were displayed on the walls for party-goers to take home
